Early Challenges and the Decision to Work
After completing high school at Toise Senior Secondary School in Nonkcampa village in 2010, Nqoro’s outstanding matric results could not immediately propel him into tertiary education due to financial constraints. With both parents unemployed, he knew he had to step up to support his family. In 2015, he began working as a full-time petrol attendant at a Shell garage in Mdantsane, taking on 12-hour night shifts to help his parents and siblings while saving for his future.
“Law is something I have always wanted to do, and I promised myself that despite the odds, I’d always pursue my ambition,” Nqoro recalls. His passion for law, coupled with his sense of duty to his family, drove him to find creative ways to balance work and aspirations.
Enrolling at the University of Fort Hare
In 2016, Siphenkosi took the first significant step toward his dream by enrolling full-time in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) program at the University of Fort Hare. Balancing his rigorous academic schedule with his demanding job was not easy. “I used to work the night shift, bathe, and prepare for school, and then be expected to go to work again,” he says. Fortunately, his workplace supervisors were supportive and allowed him to adjust his shifts when necessary.
Despite the support, the challenges were immense. In 2017, Nqoro faced financial setbacks when issues with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) left him without funding. Determined to complete his degree, he worked tirelessly to pay off the debt he owed to the university.
Graduating Against All Odds
Nqoro’s perseverance paid off when he graduated with an LLB in 2021. This milestone marked the beginning of a new chapter in his legal career. Shortly after graduation, he began his articles of clerkship at Gondongwana Ngonyama Pakade Attorneys, a law firm in East London. Here, he gained invaluable practical experience that complemented his academic foundation.
Becoming an Admitted Attorney
In 2023, Nqoro wrote and passed the board exams set by the Bar Association, a significant achievement that brought him closer to realizing his dream. By July 2024, his hard work and dedication culminated in his swearing-in as an attorney at the Makhanda High Court in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

Nqoro’s journey offers a beacon of hope and encouragement to others facing similar struggles. “My advice to others, who may fear chasing their dreams, is to start as soon as they can, despite the odds,” he says. Reflecting on his experiences, he emphasizes the importance of resilience and sacrifice. “I came to the university with one blanket and saw my peers receiving financial help from home, but it was different for me — I had to be the provider. Anyone with the same dream I had must be willing to go the extra mile.”
