Brilliant Nigerian Woman Earns First-Class in Engineering, Wins Chevening Scholarship

Hajara Kabeer Abdulfatah is a name that resonates with brilliance, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the world of energy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Born and raised in Katsina State, Northern Nigeria, Hajara has not only excelled academically but has also emerged as a passionate advocate for young girls in STEM, inspiring countless individuals with her journey and achievements.

Academic Excellence and Professional Achievements

Hajara’s academic journey is nothing short of extraordinary. She graduated with first-class honors in Petroleum and Gas Engineering from Nile University of Nigeria in 2019. Reflecting on her journey, Hajara shared that the road was far from smooth, but her determination, perseverance, and prayers kept her focused on her vision.

As an undergraduate, she actively participated in various extracurricular and professional activities. She interned with prestigious organizations such as Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO), the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), and Oriental Energy Resources Limited. Her commitment to personal and professional growth also led her to engage in technical paper writing, oil and gas online courses, and women’s development programs.

Hajara’s academic excellence and leadership potential earned her the prestigious UK Chevening Scholarship in 2022. This globally competitive award allowed her to pursue a Master’s degree in Economics and Policy of Energy and the Environment at University College London (UCL), one of the United Kingdom’s top universities. Through her studies, she deepened her expertise in energy economics and policy, with a focus on sustainable energy solutions and environmental stewardship.

Currently, Hajara serves as a vital member of the Energy Sustainability and Carbon Management team at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). In this role, she contributes to promoting sustainable energy practices and addressing the challenges of a low-carbon future.

Advocacy for Girls in STEM

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Hajara is a passionate advocate for girls’ education and empowerment, particularly in STEM fields. She founded the “Girl in STEM Initiative,” a platform dedicated to inspiring and coaching young girls in Northern Nigeria to pursue careers in STEM. Through this initiative, she promotes the #GiveGirlsRoleModels campaign, emphasizing the importance of visible female role models in breaking gender barriers in STEM.

Hajara’s advocacy extends globally as a STEM Ambassador for organizations like Coderina, where she promotes coding, robotics, and emerging technologies to young girls across Nigeria. She has also been recognized with the first-ever Girl-in-STEM Leadership Award by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Women Development Program for her outstanding contributions to STEM advocacy.

Hajara’s vision transcends her personal achievements. She aspires to become a Future Energy Professional and a pivotal figure in addressing net-zero challenges. Her interests lie at the intersection of energy, environmental sustainability, and low-carbon transitions.

As a mentor and leader, Hajara dedicates her time to guiding undergraduate students and young professionals through organizations such as Lean in Energy. She also actively participates in various professional bodies, including the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Energy Institute, and IEEE Women in Engineering.

From her graduation as a first-class engineer to her selection as a Chevening Scholar, and now as an accomplished professional and advocate, her story is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and a commitment to making a difference.

Halimat Abubakar, a remarkable Nigerian lady, has carved her name in the annals of excellence by graduating with first-class honors in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. Her outstanding performance earned her the coveted title of Best Graduating Student in her department, showcasing her dedication, resilience, and intellectual brilliance.

Halimat’s journey was defined by perseverance and determination. Starting strong in her first year with an impressive CGPA of 4.51, she faced significant challenges in her second year, leading to a drop in her CGPA to 4.28. However, these setbacks did not deter her resolve. Through hard work and consistent improvement each semester, she achieved her goal of graduating with first-class honors, finishing with a CGPA of 4.51.
