Nigeria’s prolific striker, Asisat Oshoala, has etched her name in the annals of African football history by securing the African Women’s Player of the Year award for the remarkable fifth time. The prestigious accolade was bestowed upon her at the Caf Awards ceremony in Rabat, where she outshone competitors Ajara Nchout Njoya and Grace Chanda.

Oshoala’s stellar 2021-22 season with Barcelona played a pivotal role in her clinching this record-breaking award. A linchpin in her team’s treble triumph – securing the Spanish Women’s Super Cup, Copa de la Reina, and the Primera Division – Oshoala displayed exemplary performance, sharing the league’s top scorer title after netting 20 goals in 19 appearances.

Notably, her awe-inspiring achievements include a hat-trick against Real Betis and doubles against Real Sociedad, Valencia, Villarreal, and another against Real Betis. Despite missing a few matches due to injury, her contributions to Barcelona’s campaign were undeniable, making her a standout player in women’s football.

Beyond her club success, Oshoala has made significant contributions to Nigerian football. Despite an injury sidelining her from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2022, her influence on and off the field continues to inspire the next generation of female footballers.

In a separate development, Asisat Oshoala has reached an extraordinary milestone on social media, becoming the first African female footballer to amass one million followers on Instagram. This recognition underscores her growing influence and popularity, solidifying her status as one of Africa’s most celebrated athletes. As Oshoala continues to dominate headlines, her achievements reflect not only personal triumphs but also her enduring impact on the global stage of women’s football.
