Destiny Paris James, an exceptional young lady, has not only captured the hearts of thousands through her appearance in Drake’s “God’s Plan” music video but has also overcome immense challenges to achieve academic excellence and contribute meaningfully to public health.
From a Small Town to the Spotlight
Destiny’s journey began in her small hometown of Denmark, South Carolina, where opportunities were limited. Her life took a dramatic turn when she was unexpectedly featured in Drake’s music video, receiving a $50,000 scholarship award. This unexpected windfall allowed Destiny to pursue her passion for public health at the University of Miami.
In an interview with the University of Miami, Destiny expressed her commitment to making a positive impact on her hometown. She spoke about the lack of role models in Denmark and how being referred to as “the girl from the Drake video” did not bother her but inspired her to be a role model for her community.
Navigating Challenges and Inspiring Change
Destiny faced significant challenges during her initial years at the University of Miami. Battling academic difficulties and the heartbreaking news of her father’s stage-four lung cancer diagnosis, she found herself at a crossroads. Despite these setbacks, Destiny persevered, delving into cancer awareness projects and organizing a 3K cancer awareness walk.
Realizing her calling in public health, Destiny switched her major and excelled academically, earning a spot on the Dean’s List and the Provost Honor Roll. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in public health, Destiny was determined to pursue a master’s degree with a focus on health behavior promotion education.
A Vision for Change in Public Health
Destiny’s commitment to public health did not end with her bachelor’s degree. She continued her academic journey at the University of North Carolina, earning a Master of Public Health in Health Behavior. Her dedication to community engagement, health promotion, and disease prevention is evident in her role as the Community Engagement Coordinator at the North Carolina Institute for Public Health.
Destiny’s extensive work includes cancer awareness programming in rural South Carolina, addressing health disparities in communities of color affected by COVID-19, and researching PrEP use in women. Her passion for racial and health equity is unwavering, reflecting her experiences and the challenges faced by her community.
A Multi-Talented Leader
In addition to her academic achievements, Destiny is a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and the creator of Bands Plus, a one-stop design shop where she channels her creative passions. Her diverse interests, including nature walks, supporting the Dallas Cowboys, and operating her business, showcase her multifaceted approach to life.
