Against all odds, Jeremiah Armstead, a determined 19-year-old boy who experienced homelessness, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a place at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, United States.
Jeremiah’s journey began when he moved to California with his mother, brother, and sister while still a high school student. Throughout their time in California, they faced the hardships of living in cars and seeking refuge in domestic violence shelters. Despite these challenging circumstances, Jeremiah remained resilient and determined to overcome adversity.
Using his hardships as fuel and motivation, Jeremiah excelled both academically and as a basketball player. He poured his efforts into his studies and the sport, never losing sight of his aspirations. After three years of facing homelessness alongside his family, Jeremiah received the news he had been waiting for—an acceptance letter from Fisk University.
“That’s all I needed. That’s all I ever needed in life was a chance,” expressed Armstead with gratitude and determination. He aimed to inspire others in similar circumstances, encouraging them to persevere and never give up, as life can change in an instant.
While temporarily staying at his friend’s house, Jeremiah’s mother, Mindy Brooks, joyfully shared the news of his acceptance to Fisk University, along with his selection as a member of the university’s basketball team. She expressed her unwavering belief in Jeremiah’s character, stating, “I’m not surprised Jeremiah is where he’s at today. I’m not surprised because he’s always been a good person.”
Jeremiah Armstead’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of education. Despite facing immense challenges, he refused to let his circumstances define him and seized the opportunity to create a better future for himself.
