Reflecting on her childhood dreams, Dr. Bastiany reminisces about her early desire to pursue a career in medicine, inspired by the intricate workings of the human body, particularly the cardiovascular system.
Following nearly 15 years of rigorous education, Dr. Bastiany’s lifelong dream came to fruition upon her graduation in 2020. With a steadfast determination to make a meaningful impact in the field of cardiology, she embarked on her journey to become an interventional cardiologist, driven by her passion for addressing heart-related ailments.
Currently practicing at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Bastiany’s professional trajectory has been characterized by unwavering perseverance and dedication. Having completed her medical studies at the University of Montreal and a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the University of Alberta, each milestone brought her closer to realizing her ambition of breaking barriers in her chosen field.
Despite encountering challenges as a Black woman navigating a predominantly white, male-dominated profession, Dr. Bastiany remained resolute in her pursuit of excellence. “My supervisors often struggled to comprehend the challenges I faced as a Black student and professional,” Dr. Bastiany shares, highlighting the difficulties she encountered due to systemic biases within the healthcare system.
Undeterred by these adversities, Dr. Bastiany has emerged as a staunch advocate for diversity and inclusivity within the medical community. She actively promotes greater representation of women and individuals from diverse backgrounds in cardiology, striving to create an environment that fosters equity and acceptance for future generations of healthcare practitioners.
As Canada’s first Black female interventional cardiologist, Dr. Bastiany’s achievements have garnered national recognition, with her groundbreaking contributions to the field of medicine celebrated by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during Black History Month.

In a heartening tale of resilience and determination, Jaines Andrades has defied the odds to ascend from a janitorial role to a nurse practitioner at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Her remarkable journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us all that with unwavering commitment, anything is possible.
Ten years ago, Andrades embarked on her professional career at Baystate Medical, initially joining as a janitor. Fast forward to the present day, and she proudly stands as a nurse practitioner, having navigated a decade-long journey of growth, learning, and triumph.
Her transition from custodian to healthcare professional wasn’t without its challenges. While working tirelessly to maintain the cleanliness of operating rooms and patient care areas, Andrades harbored aspirations of a career in nursing. Despite facing obstacles along the way, she remained steadfast in her pursuit of this goal.
Andrades’s path to nursing began with humble beginnings. Originally hailing from Buffalo, New York, she relocated to Springfield with her family at the age of 14. It was here, amidst the halls of Baystate Medical, that she discovered her passion for healthcare.
Her journey took a significant turn when she enrolled at Elms College, embarking on a dual journey of academic pursuit and professional advancement. Balancing her studies with her janitorial responsibilities, Andrades exemplified resilience and dedication, ultimately earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing.
